The Meaning of Life?
Welcome to your monthly motivator email,
Welcome to February!!
As this lands in your inbox I’ll be about to land at Heathrow after a trip to India…I’m expecting to be enlightened, inspired and exhausted so goodness knows what March’s message will be about!
Meanwhile, February is about the simple subject of…
THE MEANING OF LIFE (?)
The truth of the matter is, the meaning of life is whatever you decide it means.
Sorry not to provide you with a structure and reason to fall back on but there it is.
And yet, once again, the lack of direction from elsewhere gives us control, the ability to choose for ourselves.
Let me explain…in the words of Dr Seuss “Put your future in good hands – your own…”
IT’S YOUR MOVIE…
You may remember the story of Chicken Licken who, having experienced an acorn falling on her head, decided that the sky must be falling in and that she must rush and tell the King in order that something could be done about it.
She enlisted the help of many other creatures including Foxy Loxy, Goosey Loosey and I also think Simon Cowell went, he’s always up for a bit of drama.
Now then, I’m not saying we shouldn’t be community minded, if the sky was falling in and the world’s safety depended on a certain bantam to have the guts to travel to Buckingham Palace to mention it then I’d give her the train fare. But there is a problem that happened early on which is that good old Ms Licken took 2+2 and instead of making 4 she made an omelette.
Here are some examples of the same behaviour that you may be familiar with:
You drop your change and decide that means you will have the worst day from now on
Someone is ranting about what’s gone wrong and your immediate reaction is to believe it’s your fault (and that they blame you)
Someone is telling you about their problems and you immediately think that means it’s your job to fix it
You see a police car go by and you do a quick guilty check of what you may have done wrong
There is a serious crime reported on the news and you think that means things are getting worse, people are worse and we’re more in danger than ever before
Something major changes in your life without you choosing it and you decide that means everything will go badly as a result
The magic ingredient in all of these situations is
THE MEANING WE PLACE ON THINGS – Whatever happens, it only means what we decide it means.
Here are another couple of examples; someone is shouting at you…
You can decide this means you’re the worst person/wife/partner/worker/brother/whatever in the world
OR you can decide this means “they’re angry”
You’re driving along and someone gets road rage and blares their horn and gestures at you
You can decide you must have done something wrong and feel punished, or feel outrage that they have accused you when you were innocent
OR you can decide ‘here’s someone who is having a very bad day and doesn’t seem to be able to cope”
CHANGING HABITS
If you have the unfortunate habit of thinking the worst, assuming the blame, taking all the responsibility, deciding it’s all going to hell in a hoola hoop…notice it’s just that; a habit.
It’s not who you are, it’s not ‘in your nature’ (nature built you as a creative optimistic kind of soul) and habits can be changed.
Ok, not always quickly, but maybe, just maybe, the next time it rains you can decide that means not that the sky is falling or the met office want you to have a bad day but decide that it means the plants will grow. Put up your brolly and splash!
If you’re fed up with Winter, you could cover your eyes, curl up and ignore the next few weeks, or you could decide to give it new meaning…February is a strange time of shift-changes between the folks working on Winter weather and the folks who organise Spring. Nights are already getting a bit lighter (my automatic timer light is now coming on before it’s dark
and the birds are singing more, everything must pass and soon the delights of the new spring will be upon us. What will that mean for you?
