The Feel Good Club

New Year New You - or will the old you do?

NEW YEAR!!
NEW YOU!!
…or will the ‘old you’ do?

New Year Resolutions – Where do they come from? And why don’t they work?
They often start with a ‘should’…
“I should lose weight”
“I should give up smoking”
“I should go to the gym”

Doesn’t sound in the least bit tempting eh?!
But why is ‘should’ so de-motivating?
Because it’s pressure from elsewhere. When we WANT to do something, we generally say so;
“I want to go to Zumba”
“I want a really big salad”
Whereas ‘should’ sounds like someone else thinks it’s a good idea but that we’re not so keen.

Someone else’s plan
Someone else’s plan is never going to work if it’s not what you want.
You may think you have to be some kind of superhero, but who says so?
Every year there’s a big emphasis on
‘New Year, New You’ – Well just maybe the ‘old’ you is just fine!
If you get back to who you really are, take the pressure off and focus on what really matters to you, you might find you do want to lose weight or give up smoking, but now it’s what you want, so you’re more likely to succeed.
Be who you are…
Thinking about making changes in your life start with answering this simple question:
“What do I want?”
Followed by “Why do I want it?”
The answers give you a list of reasons to feel excited and committed to the change. For instance;
“I want to lose weight so I can feel energised and sexy”
“I want to give up smoking because I want to taste food properly and stay indoors after a lovely meal”
“I want to exercise so I feel strong and can fight off colds”

Getting back to who you are and what’s important to you can help you make positive changes successfully or can help you realise things are just fine as they are thank you very much!

If change is what you want…
…then it’s important to take it easy. Plan easy and enjoyable steps towards what you want. Notice the successes, however small along the way and keep on reminding yourself of why you’re choosing this; don’t fall into the ‘should’ thinking or you’ll make it seem like a chore someone told you to do.
Most mornings I head out at first light to open the chicken run and let them free range in the garden. Then I scoop all the poop from their bedding. It’s not the most pleasant part of having chickens but remembering it’s what I want and how much joy they bring reminds me that it’s my choice; I’m in control, it’s part of the bigger picture and it makes me happy.
It’s a similar story in the kitchen; I’ve been losing weight since June and some days I’ve looked at the chocolate in the fridge and felt frustrated that I ‘shouldn’t’ eat it. Then I remember that I’m choosing not to eat it because I’d rather feel energised and slim – I’m making a choice and I’m in control.
So if you’re thinking of making changes, or indeed if you’ve already started, remember your goal; what do you want and why? It’s up to you to choose and you are in control. If it’s what you want and you keep focused on that, you’re much more likely to get there.
