The Path Most Trodden - June’s message
THE PATH MOST TRODDEN
Quick Quote for those on the go: “That’s what learning is. You suddenly understand something you’ve understood all your life, but in a new way.” Doris Lessing
What’s that all about? Well it’s simple, sometimes there’s an easier way and we spend our time and energy ignoring it and making life hard. So don’t.
;o)
M Scott Peck’s book ‘The Road Less Travelled’ is a famous and useful one for anyone trying to live a more authentic and satisfying life but it was on a recent (10 mile!) walk that another phrase came to mind:
‘The path most trodden’
It doesn’t sound half as meaningful unless you’re half way through a very long cold wet walk and realise as you’re heaving your not-very-fit body up a hill of long grass that you’re having to lift your legs twice as high as usual just to make it through. I was in this position a couple of weeks ago and I really was trying to remain positive and remember that this was a ‘Good Thing To Do At The Weekend’ but truely was grimacing at the climb, the weather, the long grass, the leg lifting…and then I laughed out loud – I spotted that there were tracks through the grass where farm vehicles had driven, making two lovely flattened tracks up the hill.
I turned to the woman walking behind me and suggested we take ‘the path most trodden’ and we laughed at our own crazy determination to take the most difficult route.
Does that happen in the rest of our lives? Well I think it does…sometimes we take the hard route when there are other ways of doing the same thing. For instance, giving ourselves too little time to get things done, putting too much in our diaries, expecting ourselves to achieve everything on the long long to do list instead of acknowledging what we’re physically able to do in one day and being happy with that. How often do we grit our teeth determined to do something on our own when someone else could help? And how many times do you drop stuff because you’re trying to carry everything in one journey when two trips would make life easier and less stressful?
Taking the path most trodden is about using what you have available and noticing the easier way…not just the way we’ve always done it.
So, while the weather tries to make up it’s mind what season we’re in, make yourself a little promise – notice the easier way and then choose to take it, maybe someone else already went that way and left a door open for you…
With much love and a few giggles at the crazy way we learn the most simple things,
Have fun,
