Chuck It Out! The Motivator for March
Welcome to your monthly motivator email,
Busy minds, busy lives, busy diaries…leads to an awful lot of clutter.
This month we look at whether it’s just a fact of life and how clutter – in all it’s forms – might affect us.
WELCOME TO MARCH and the Big Spring Clean!
Our trip to India was mind-blowing, because we were mostly in major cities one of the things that most struck us was the clutter and overcrowding. But you know, when you get home, you start to notice you’re not innocent of all charges yourself…
BUSY LIFE = BUSY MIND?
It’s seems inevitable:
We have a busy life and we expect to have a busy mind. And that busy mind sometimes doesn’t know when to stop…we finally get to the end of the day, the week, the start of our holiday, any kind of ‘switch off time’ but the busy mind just keeps on going.
But with a bit of decluttering, it really is possible to have a busy life and a peaceful mind. Just like a messy desk or an untidy house, we have to notice what’s cluttering and take steps to get rid.
DE-CLUTTER – TIDY DESK : TIDY MIND
It’s an old familiar phrase and it’s stood the test of time because it still rings true; If your environment is cluttered you feel overwhelmed and more stressed, when your environment is clean and clear then you can think more clearly and feel more motivated.
So the opportunity this month is to start to get rid of the things you don’t really need. If you’re a bit of a hoarder take a deep breath and as you let it out imagine just how clear you’ll feel with more space, less clutter. Ask yourself do I REALLY need it?
If you fall into the trap of “Well I might need it one day” Ask yourself “How long have I had it and have I needed it in that time?”
Now I hear you saying “If I throw it away after all this time, you can bet the day after it’s gone, I’ll need it!”
So, if you need another little nudge ask yourself “If I throw it away and then find I need it, can I manage with some other solution?” If you’re honest with yourself the answers might go something like this…
“I’ve kept those plastic take-away boxes for 5 years, I use some but the rest pile up”
“No, I don’t really need them all and they take up space”
“If I throw them away then find I needed them, I can use something else, a dish with cling film would do”
Have a look around and follow the environmental code:
What can I ‘Reduce, Re-use or Recycle?’
and try and get rid of one thing a week or better still one thing a day and watch your life become clearer and better focused.
Chuck it out, pass it on or use it for something else. It feels good and you know it makes sense.
So what about my head? That’s still full of rubbish!
In just the same way, think about the things your head is full of and decide what you no longer need. For instance does worrying about something make it turn out better? Does whittling over something in the past change what happened?
The answer usually is ‘no, it just makes me feel worse when I go over it’
Here are some tips for tidying up your mind:
• Talk to someone else about the things you want to get rid of, decide that once you’ve named them, you’ve got rid once and for all
• Write it down and burn it
• Write it down and put it in the freezer to ‘chill out’
• Work out how you picture it in your head and imagine shrinking the picture, making it fuzzy, pushing it away as you breathe out and then thinking of something lovely like a holiday, a happy memory or beautiful scenery
• Use the ‘bee breath’ close your eyes, breathe in through your nose and as you breathe out make a humming sound. Do this 10 times and notice how the vibrations seem to clear your mind
If you have any tips of your own, email us and we’ll post them in upcoming monthly messages or post them on the Feel Good Club forum at the website. It’s great to share the stuff that helps us feel good ![]()
